Guest Speaker: This week’s guest speaker was Scott Boucher. Scott is a member of the Rotary Club of Old Town. He has served as the chair for Polio Plus on the Maine side of District 7790 for 10 years. Scott provided a presentation about Polio around the world. He spoke about the history and where the disease is today.
Polio, or poliomyelitis, is a paralyzing and potentially deadly infectious disease that most commonly affects children under the age of 5. The virus spreads from person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can then attack the nervous system.
Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 35 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is closer than ever.
As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979.
Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries from this paralyzing disease. Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by governments to contribute more than $10 billion to the effort.
Today, polio remains endemic only in Afghanistan and Pakistan. But it’s crucial to continue working to keep other countries polio-free. If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year.
World Polio Day is a time for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free from polio to come together, recognize our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take in order to end polio for good.
The Rotary Club of Ellsworth held it's Annual Polio Walk on Saturday, October 21st to spread awareness of Polio. To date the club has raised over $1,000.00 towards Polio vaccines! These funds will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Guest Speaker: This week’s guest speaker was Nick Turner, Executive Director of The Grand since 2017. The past six years has had it’s us and downs including a pandemic. Nick shared with club members about a book he found called Mr. Fooster Traveling on Whim by Tom Corwin and Illustrated by Craig Frazier.
Short description of the book: Mr. Fooster seems like your average fellow, albeit one who travels with an old bottle of bubble soap. One Tuesday morning, however, he takes us into a rich and vivid world unlike any we've seen before—a world where questioning your assumptions can set you free. Heading out the door with no particular place to go, Mr. Fooster is led by his boundless curiosity to reflect on questions like why is it you never see baby pigeons, and who figured out how to eat artichokes? Mr. Fooster shows us that pondering the little things in life can be a reward unto itself.
The pairing of Tom Corwin's lyrical prose and Craig Frazier's enchanting illustrations create a world where believing is seeing.
This is one of Nick’s favorites books. He read the first chapter to members and loved how the book has a lot of “meandering and pondering” which leads to a lot of ideas and impulses that can be created at The Grand. “Whim’s do lead to great things or sometimes a dead end. Acting is made up of “what ifs and impulses”
Debbie Ehrlenbach presented a check to Nick Turner in the amount of $500.00 towards The Grand’s handicap lift that will be used for individuals to have access to the stage while performing. The lift was delivered to The Grand just in time during the Summer Grand Theatre Camp. A local boy was happy to be able to use it!

You can become one of the 100+ volunteers within this program and learn more at www.chrisbfund.org
Matt shared how CBF used a $500 Rotary Club of Ellsworth Community Grant Award in March of 2019 as seed money and developed it into current CBF program with a $400,000 operating budget and currently 100+ volunteers donating over 300 hours per week delivering a “box of soul” to cancer patients in the program.
Matt further explained how each patient after their diagnosis can be connected to CBF through their provider. The nutrition program begins with a meeting with a dietician and the nutrition team to develop the strong nutrition component of their standard of care program. CBF then follows through to ensure that each patient receives their grocery packages each week consisting of ½ produce; ¼ meats and proteins; and ¼ grains and miscellaneous items.

Foundation Update: Lincoln explained what EREY is (Every Rotarian Every Year) and why everyone is encouraged to donate. The Annual Fund-SHARE is the primary source of funding for a broad range of local and international Rotary Foundation activities. Every Rotarian, Every Year (EREY) is the fundraising initiative designed to encourage support for the Foundation’s Annual Fund. EREY aims to engage every Rotary club member by: Encouraging members to contribute to the Annual Fund every year and Encouraging them to participate in a Foundation grant or program every year. Through the SHARE system, contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into grants for projects that change lives. At the end of every Rotary year, contributions to the Annual Fund- SHARE from all Rotary clubs in a district are directed into two funds: Fifty percent is credited to the World Fund. Fifty percent is credited to the District Designated Fund. The Foundation uses the World Fund portion to pay for the worldwide grant and program opportunities available to all Rotary districts. Your district uses the District Designated Fund portion to fund the Foundation grants and programs of its choice. The Rotary Foundation’s funding cycle makes district contributions available for use three years after they are received. The three-year cycle gives districts time to plan projects and activities and allows the Foundation to invest the contributions. Your district Rotary Foundation committee decides how to use the District Designated Funds in consultation with the clubs in the district.
