Help volunteer to staff our Juneteenth event at Knowlton Park this year - 6-19, 3:30pm - 7:00pm Every year, Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 that Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were first told that they were freed from slavery, nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Annual Juneteenth Downeast events leverage the power of visual arts, spoken word, music, call and response, and group participation/collaboration to: illuminate the continuum of the Black experience in Maine; celebrate the rich legacy and contributions of Black Mainers; honor the dedication and sacrifices of so many in past and present struggles for racial justice; raise awareness about the importance of Juneteenth; and heal, uplift, and reenergize BIPOC members of the community.
