Guest Speaker: Our guest speaker was Sarah Demarest of Aroostook Mental Health Center (AMHC) Sexual Assault Services Supervisor for Washington and Hancock County.

Sarah has been working with survivors of sexual violence since 2011. She started her journey as a sexual assault advocate in the Navy.  Her career has evolved over the years, continuing as an advocate for the Navy, as a Sexual Assault Advocate Point of Contact where she taught continuing education for advocates and then a Sexual Assault Liaison for one of our Combatant Commands for all branches of service.

In Maine, she has worked for Rape Response Services serving Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties and currently, AMHC Sexual Assault Services as the supervisor for Washington and Hancock County.   AMHC Sexual Assault Services promotes healing and justice to all affected by sexual violence through advocacy, education, and prevention.  Their services are for anyone affected by sexual violence in Aroostook, Hancock, Washington Counties, Maine. They are a free and confidential support service that offers a 24/7 helpline. Some of the services that are included with AMHC Sexual Assault Services are advocacy, medical, legal, law enforcement accompaniments, support groups, and prevention-based education for all ages.

Their helpline is 1-800-871-7741, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for victim/survivors, family, friends, and professionals. Their Children’s Advocacy Centers are committed to minimizing trauma and promoting healing for children and their families following the allegations of sexual abuse. The centers provide a streamlined, timely, and evidence-based community response in a safe and neutral environment. They have two Children’s Advocacy Centers, one in Fort Fairfield and one in Marshfield. They have a passionate team, dedicated to meeting survivors where they are at on their path to healing.
